The standard leadership of most Legion Posts typically consists of:
Post Commander who is responsible for the overall operation of the Post including supervising the duties of all other Post officers and activities to ensure that they meet the highest standards and fulfill the tenants of The American Legion.
1st Vice Commander who is responsible primarily for the Post's membership program.
2nd Vice Commander who is responsible for assisting the Post commander with all duties and is key with regard to patriotic observances, developing Post activities including entertainment features which should be an integral part of all meetings.
Adjutant who is responsible for the administrative aspects of the Post and should be concerned with the overall effectiveness of Post activities.
Finance Officer who is responsible for receiving and dispersing all the Post's funds and Chairman of a Finance Committee.
Service Officer who is responsible for advising and assisting veterans in the preparation of basic Veterans Administration (VA) forms.
Chaplain who is responsible for providing the spiritual leadership for the Post.
Sergeant-at-Arms who is responsible for introducing all visiting comrades and guests of the Post to make sure they feel welcomed and that the colors are properly maintained and displayed.
Historian who is responsible for compiling and preserving the records of the Post.
Judge Advocate who is responsible for providing professional advice concerning the conduct of Post business or to obtain proper counsel.
It should be noted that sometimes it may not be possible to fill all the Post Officer positions and some variations concerning responsibilities may exist within any given Post.
If you're interested in assuming a leadership position within the Post, elections are normally held in May of each year at the general meeting. A nominating committee is appointed prior to that to seek eligible, capable, and interested candidates.
